Blackberry Leaf c/s Wild (Rubus fruticosus) from USA. Wildcrafted, cut/sifted. Freshest-dried herb (no more than 3 months from time of harvest, guaranteed). This high-quality herb can be used both for medicinal or magickal use. 1 pound.

Used as an infusion, decoction, extract and tincture.

Rubus fruticosus is the English blackberry.

Both the tea and the stronger decoction have traditionally been used as effective treatments for diarrhea, and sore throat, and modern science has confirmed this empirical tradition.

The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends Blackberry leaf for 'Nonspecific, acute diarrhea, mild inflammation of the mucosa of the oral cavity and throat.'

'Daily dose: 4.5 g of leaf; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Comminuted drug for teas, and other preparations for internal use, as well as for mouth washes. Duration of Administration: If diarrhea persists for longer than 3 - 4 days, consult with a physician. Action: Astringent.'

The same tannin-based astringency makes cooled blackberry tea a useful gargle for sore throats, and an equally useful cold compress for varicose veins, hemorrhoids and various skin problems. Blackberry leaf decoction makes an effective astringent douche.

Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'The bark of the root and the leaves contain much tannin, and have long been esteemed as a capital astringent and tonic, proving a valuable remedy for dysentery and diarrhoea, etc. The root is the more astringent.'

'The fruit contains malic and citric acids, pectin and albumen. If desiccated in a moderately hot oven and then reduced to a powder, it is a reliable remedy for dysentery.'

'The root-bark, as used medicinally, ... makes a good decoction. Half a teacupful should be taken every hour or two for diarrhoea. One ounce of the bruised root, likewise boiled in water, may also be used, the dose being larger, however. The same decoction is said to be useful against whooping-cough in the spasmodic stage.'

'The leaves are also employed for the same purpose. One ounce of the dried leaves, infused in one pint of boiling water, and the infusion taken cold, a teacupful at a time, makes a serviceable remedy for dysentery, etc..'
